HISTORY OF CANADICE
The Dighton Company

Chapter 7

THE DIGHTON COMPANY

A company known as the Dighton Company was organized for the purpose of purchasing lands from the Phelps-Gorham Company as soon as their title cold be perfected. It was started by the Pitts family and named after their home town of Dighton, Massachusetts.

Gideon Pitts and Calvin Jacobs were delighted to attend the treaty making with the Indians and to select a site for the company's purchase. The Dighton Company's purchase consisted of 46, 080 acres of land, a considerable portion of which was within the boundaries of Richmond and Bristol. The title was taken in the name of Gideon Pitts and Calvin Jacobs.

The lands were then apportioned by lottery. Captain Peter Pitts drew 3,000 acres at the foot of Honeoye Lake, including the cleared fields near the Indian village.
